The drug Trasylol (aprotinin) was released by Bayer AG in 1993, for the reduction of blood loss and the need for blood transfusions during major surgeries. Since its release and eventual recall in 2008, this drug was used in one third of all open heart surgery patients throughout the U.S. Unfortunately, by the time the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and other agencies became aware of this drug’s problems and were able to prove its danger it had already harmed countless patients.

The FDA initially issued a warning in 2006 that encouraged physicians to keep a watchful eye on any patients who had been given Trasylol during surgery. Bayer voluntarily recalled the drug worldwide in November of 2007, pending various studies that indicated its potential danger to patients. The main side effects included heart failure, kidney failure and stroke. One study of 10,000 cardiac bypass patients conducted by Duke University Medical Center showed a 250% increase in the likelihood of patients to die within a month of their operation who had taken Trasylol, versus those who were not given the drug. Another study demonstrated an increased risk of death within 5 years of surgery, of patients who had received Trasylol injections.
