About Trasylol

Trasylol (aprotinin) is a protein derived from cow pancreas or lungs that is administered by injection in order to reduce bleeding and the need for blood transfusion in complex surgeries, particularly heart and liver surgery. By reducing bleeding the drug was also intended to reduce organ damage due to low blood pressure caused by the extensive loss of blood during surgery. Trasylol was first introduced on the market in 1993 by the pharmaceutical giant Bayer AG. Since that time it was used in approximately one third of all open heart surgery patients until its final recall in May 2008.

Trasylol was first withdrawn from the market by Bayer in November 2007 due to studies conducted by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, Health Canada and other agencies that showed evidence that the aprotinin injection may cause a higher risk in patients of renal failure (kidney failure), heart attack and stroke. In May 2008 the drug was permanently withdrawn from the worldwide market and is only available for limited research purposes.

The majority of heart patients who were given Trasylol during surgery are completely unaware of this fact. The decision to administer this injection would have been up to the doctor (while it was still in wide use on the market).

If you or a loved one underwent heart surgery and is now suffering from complications related to the kidneys or heart, it is possible that Trasylol was administered and you are now experiencing side effects. If you have lost a loved one who had been given an aprotinin injection during their surgery, it is possible that Trasylol is to blame.

An attorney experienced with Trasylol lawsuits can review your situation and determine whether you may be able to take legal action against Bayer and receive financial compensation for your injuries or loss. At Tracey Law Firm, we represent clients throughout the U.S. and offer a free consultation with a skilled Trasylol attorney to help you get started.
